For first time online students, here are some things you should know and advice on how to be successful.
Communicate with your professor
Your professor should provide clear instruction on how your course is set up and how you will be connecting to the course. You should know the best way to communicate with your professor and classmates. Make sure you have a clear understanding of when the course will be held and all materials needed for the course.
Know the expectations
There are two ways in which your course could be taught and you should be clear of the expectations that have been set up. The first way is a synchronous course in which there is a specific time for you to login with the class. The second way is asynchronous which you can complete the coursework on your own at a time that is convenient for you. In either case, you are accountable for the work and need to stay on track.
There will most likely be online discussions and course work with your peers. Your professor will hold you accountable for those just as if you were taking the course in person. Know the expectations and reach out to your professor with any questions you may have.
Create a functional work space
You will need a dedicated space set up for learning. Figure out where you feel the most productive and have the least amount of distractions. You will need a high speed internet connection and an updated computer. Headphones come in handy for listening to lectures, especially if you go to a public space.
Utilize your resources
You will have available resources even though you are taking classes online. Be aware of the resources available and use them as needed. Place due dates on a calendar and bookmark frequently used websites for your convenience. Your professor will most likely have a discussion board for the class. Check the board often as questions will be posted and answers to those questions. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your professor directly.
Use your time wisely
There will be an adjustment period if your course is set up to go at your own pace. It is a new concept to set your own time and have that much flexibility. Follow your syllabus and stay on track, making sure you don’t miss any due dates. Be active in class discussions and set aside time to do your coursework. Schedule it and make it happen.
Participate and work together
Online classes can feel like you’re completely on your own, but that is not the case. Professors encourage students to actively work with other classmates on assignments. Discussion among your peers is good. Read emails, ask questions and decide to be an active participant in the class. In the long run, you will get more out of the class.
