There are many benefits to taking online classes. They offer flexibility, they can attract professionals looking for career advancement, parents can seek to improve their ability to provide for their families and people can return to school to finish a degree. Some online programs may even offer control over the pace of learning.
However, if you’ve never taken an online class, you may not know exactly what to expect or how they may differ from traditional classes. Questions like: Are they more difficult? How do I stay on track?
Here you will find some insider knowledge from people who have been in your shoes. Having questions is completely normal and sometimes it’s best to consult with those who have gone before you and figured some things out. Here are seven things they wish they had known before beginning an online journey.
1. Don’t look for an easy route
It is common to ask if taking online classes is easier. The simple answer is no.
While it is true that online courses offer more flexibility, it doesn’t change the amount of work you are required to put in.
For busy students, the flexibility of online classes can be very helpful. The freedom it creates also brings in the responsibility of being organized and staying on track.
While some online courses may have a reputation for being easy, many online courses require more work from students. The type of work that isn’t necessarily answered by a simple Google search.
2. Taking online classes may result in a higher GPA
Online classes have the potential to boost your grades. It’s not guaranteed but if you are organized and can keep track of deadlines for upcoming assignments and projects and can avoid procrastination, you may benefit from the amount of control you have.
Listening to lectures online allows you to pause and take notes or even rewatch parts you may have missed. You can always reach out to the instructor by messaging to ask questions about the material you need help with.
3. Learn technology and have IT support
You will need a reliable internet connection and operating system to stay on top of your work. Having a personal computer or tablet is also a must. You will want to become familiar with the platform used before starting any classes. It may be Blackboard, Canvas, or another platform but you will want to know how to use it before beginning class.
4. Time management will make or break you
It’s up to you to keep up with assignments when enrolled in online classes. Having flexibility is nice but it can be tricky if you start to let due dates slip and miss assignments,
I cannot stress the importance of organization enough. There is no room for procrastination, which will negatively affect your grades. It is extremely hard to catch up once you fall behind on assignments.
Studying for online classes will take about the same amount of time as traditional classes. Many times students underestimate the amount of time needed to be prepared.
Some students have stated they didn’t realize there would be strict deadlines. There’s a lot of scheduling and planning involved even though you are not meeting in person
5.Group projects are still a thing
Even though you are an online student, it does not exempt you from group projects. With collaborative tools at your fingertips, along with video conferencing, it will make it easier for group work. Also with Google Docs and other sharing services, it allows group projects to run smoothly. Expect group work with online classes and be prepared to collaborate with other students online.
6. Put forth an effort to make connections
With online classes, how do you form friendships, find mentors, and network among students?
Online learning can definitely be less personable. It is easy to miss out on opportunities to connect with other students, faculty, and school personnel. I strongly recommend you make an effort to reach out to other classmates and professors.
I encourage students to participate in chats and any other form of interaction available. Online platforms are becoming more creative in finding ways for students to connect. Always ask how to get in touch with the professor and be the first to reach out to them.
7. Online classes could be what you are missing
Many students find an online school to be less stressful than a traditional class. You have less drive time, don’t need to worry about finding a seat in class and other distractions are removed as well. You are in your own environment and many find comfort in that.
For many students, online is a better choice than in-person classes. The ability to work at your own pace is a big advantage. Online also allows you to integrate studying into your schedule making it convenient for you. It’s on your terms and as long as you stay organized and focused you will be a successful online student.
